Preconception Diet 101: Eat smart before pregnancy

What you eat before pregnancy matters.
A nutritious preconception diet, starting at least three months ahead, can support fertility and increase your chances of conceiving.

And nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle. Lifestyle, age, reproductive conditions, and correcting nutritional deficiencies prior to conception can also influence your chances of conceiving.

The critical role of folic acid in your preconception diet

Folic acid is one of the most important nutrients to focus on before pregnancy, as many women may not get enough key fertility nutrients, such as folate and iron, from their preconception diet.

Taking folic acid before conception—alone or with other micronutrients—helps prepare for a healthy pregnancy. The WHO recommends 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from the time you begin trying until 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Here’s a science-based guide to the preconception diet that can help you get pregnant faster and give your little one the best possible start!
