How to check your weight before pregnancy

One of the first steps towards a healthy pregnancy is to check if you are at a healthy pre-pregnancy weight as your weight might impact your ability to conceive. Therefore, start tracking your weight now.

Calculate your BMI

For adults, a healthy weight is defined as the appropriate body weight in relation to height. Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated from your height and weight and is a useful measure to prevent overweight and obesity. Use a BMI calculator for adults and learn your BMI by entering your height and body weight.

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered “normal” for a woman before pregnancy. If your BMI is lower than this, your baby-to-be has an increased possibility of being a low birth weight or arriving early.

If your BMI is over 30 when you become pregnant, there is a greater chance of developing pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes. You are also more likely to give birth to a large baby at risk of becoming overweight and having health problems later in life.
